Fort Story Forestry Inventory

During the summer and fall of 1999, Williamsburg Environmental Group, Inc. (WEG) teamed with Terwilliger Consulting and others to conduct a detailed forest inventory of the Fort Story installation in Virginia Beach, Virginia. The project encompassed all undeveloped portions of the base, and entailed documentation and quantification of all existing species within a pre-determined sampling grid.  The information was utilized in combination with spectral reflectance imagery to document forest types and identify land use patterns and potential impacts on the native flora.  WEG contributed field teams and aerial photographic interpretation, as well as digital photographs and GPS survey support.  WEG ecologists preserved samples of all taxa encountered, and prepared herbarium specimens for verification and cataloguing at participating herbaria.  This project was unique in its exposure to several floristic zones over relatively short distances, transitioning from beach and foredune communities to interdunal swales and maritime forests to deepwater swamps and mesic hardwood flats.  Team members were challenged by the abrupt interface of community types, and answered the challenge by providing detailed mapping in a quantified manner.
