Fort Eustis Athletic Fields
Mason District Park
Greensprings Greenway Trail Design Williamsburg Environmental Group, Inc. (WEG) was asked by Centennial Contractors Enterprises, Inc. to design new lighted softball and soccer fields as well as renovations to an existing youth baseball field at Fort Eustis. WEG was responsible for providing a topographic survey, field layout, grading and drainage design, agronomy, irrigation design, lighting design, construction plans and specific preparation, and Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plan (SWPPP).
WEG developed multiple scenarios before choosing a design that best aligned to the current and future plans of the site. Site constraints, solar orientation, and the potential for additional fields were the primary factors in developing the final design. A grading plan was completed that minimized earthwork, while still providing excellent drainage for the ball fields. WEG developed an erosion and sediment control plan for the site in accordance with the Virginia Erosion and Sediment Control manual. The plan included all relevant notes and details as well as a narrative. A SWPPP was developed in accordance with Fort Eustis standards.
The construction plans included all construction details pertaining to the skin infield, fencing, backstop, foul poles and dugouts to meet Fort Eustis requirements. Specifications pertaining to turf establishment were tailored to fit the client's budget constraints as well as a compressed schedule for making the softball field available for play. In addition, WEG led coordination efforts for irrigation and electrical design to ensure high quality playing conditions.
In order to meet tight deadlines for expenditure of allocated funding and completion of the softball field, WEG partnered with East Coast Athletics (ECA), a construction firm specializing in athletic field construction, to develop a construction budget and ultimately construct the facilities. WEG and ECA were able to complete both the design and construction of the sports fields within th eallocated time and budget.
