Get to Know WEG…

Williamsburg Environmental Group, Inc. (WEG) is a great company to work with and an even better company to work for. There are always exciting projects going on, fun social activities to get employees involved, and new adventures on the horizon. Whether you’re looking at WEG as a potential partner or employer, we hope to give you some further insight as to why we consider WEG to be one of the best companies around.

A History:

Williamsburg Environmental Group, Inc. was born in a garage in the spring of 1990 in Williamsburg, Virginia. Two young entrepreneurs (Principals Ron Boyd and Mike Kelly) brought their technical skills together to form a small environmental consulting firm.  The initial focus for the company was on Ecology, Water Resources, and Regulatory Permitting. After many years of expanding services and acquiring new expertise, WEG has still maintained that focus. Although their business began with service mainly to private-sector clients, WEG now has a 60/40 percent mix of private/public clients.  “It still amazes me to think about where we started from” commented Ron Boyd, “it seems like just yesterday…”

WEG has since grown from two partners to a present staff of nearly 100 full-time professionals and support staff.  WEG has built a qualified staff of professional engineers, planners, wetland ecologists, and regulatory specialists with advanced degrees and specific technical skills which are highly integrated.  WEG is sensitive to the important environmental values of the region and the firm strives to be involved in projects that are supportive of these values.  The firm meets these objectives by working closely with the client in defining the environmental components of a project early in the planning process and then prescribing appropriate measures to protect the more sensitive areas.  With its corporate office located in historic Williamsburg, it also has branch offices in Richmond, Herndon, and Fredericksburg and an office located in Lakeland, Florida.

A Company, A Family:

WEG not only specializes in the professional aspects of business but in the personal aspects as well. Employees enjoy a diverse community of co-workers, exciting career opportunities, and excellent benefits! The company maintains a professional yet personable atmosphere in each of its offices and supports numerous company-sponsored social activities.

Social Time

Summer Time:

Most recently, our company's Summer Party was held at Colonial Downs in New Kent, Virginia.  Colonial Downs was a great venue for a family-friendly event.  The race track and “Tent on the Green”, an area adjacent to the grandstand, provided plenty of fun and an exciting atmosphere. We had an old-fashioned picnic buffet, with pulled-pork BBQ, slow roasted chicken, and picnic fare like baked beans, cole slaw, potato salad, cookies, brownies, etc. Each employee received a race program and expert “pony pickin” advice from a track handicapper.  There were betting stations at the tent for WEG’s use for the folks who wanted to partake in some friendly wagers.  We had a fun time coming up with kid-friendly games and activities as well, and the saddling and walking ring was fan-friendly; some of the handlers allowed our kids to pat their horses. Also, it just so happened that Colonial Downs was having “Fan Appreciation Day” that day and had scheduled various family-friendly specials and events. All in all, it was an A+ event and everyone had a blast!

Past years' summer parties have been held at a variety of venues.  In 2007, the group traveled out to the fun and exciting Richmond Braves stadium - and experienced an awesome cookout and a great ball game. "Having the Summer Party at the ball field is a great way to spend a fun Saturday getting to know your co-workers better," commented one employee.

Prior to that, summer parties were commonly held at the beach front.  Between the jet-ski, fish fry, live band, and frozen daiquiri machines, the parties rocked all day long. People were in and out of the water, catching some much needed relief from the summer sun.

Holiday Time:

The past few year's Holiday Parties have been held at the Crowne Plaza in downtown Richmond, Virginia with a great turnout!  Casino Night was a big hit and employees went home with lots of great prizes including a flat screen TV, digital camcorder, camera, VCR/DVD recorder, and an iPOD.  The night was filled with food, fun, dancing, and lots of great photo opps...

The day kicked off with our traditional company-wide golf tournament held at the Providence Golf Course. Party festivities started in the evening with music and an open bar. There were delicious appetizers available and a great dinner buffet followed.

The 2005 and 2006 Holiday Parties were held at the Great Wolf Lodge in Williamsburg, Virginia. Both events were incredibly memorable. Festivities included a pre-party golf tournament, an awesome Casino Night, dancing, raffle drawings for great door-prizes, and tasty food and beverages.  The evening was full of good food, good company, and great dancing! A good time was had by all.

Sports:

WEG’s involvement in league sports is a popular past-time for employees. Whether it is softball, basketball, or volleyball, you’ll always find a good crowd and a fun time.

Volleyball

WEG routinely gets involved with a company-sponsored recreation volleyball team.  The 2008 Team finished in fourth place in the league, a significant improvement over previous years.  As always, the team had a wonderful (and fun) time playing in the local league.  During the final tournament, the team very nearly knocked off the first place team in the early rounds!

Basketball

The ladies' team (The Pogonias, fondly named for the Threatened and Endangered flower the Small Whorled Pogonia) played for the 2007 and 2008 seasons.  With a great team of players, we had a ton of fun. The ladies proved that you don't always have to be the best of the best in order to have a great time. "I have never enjoyed playing with a group of girls so much in my life" commented one of the point guards, "it's like playing with family!"

The WEG 2008 men's team made it all the way to the semi-finals game, where they were sadly defeated in a very exciting match.  Games were always well-attended by co-workers; somewhat of a tail-gating crowd you could say.
