Williamsburg Environmental Group, Inc. (WEG) has combined its specialized environmental services in the areas of ecology, environmental planning, civil engineering, and regulatory support to provide specific services for over 200 existing and proposed golf course facilities. Prudent planning is crucial to the development of an environmentally sensitive golf course. This entails the early identification and proper treatment of all critical environmental issues before they can become problems. A clear development strategy, which considers all environmental factors, can reduce a project's schedule and costs.

Below are brief descriptions of some of the specific services WEG offers, followed by a complete list of golf capabilities.
Ecosystem Banking Brochure (Download PDF 762KB)
| Ecosystem Banking |
Ecosystem Banking (i.e. stream / wetland mitigation banking, conservation banking, nutrient offset banking) can be a vehicle for land owners to achieve long term goals and potential financial gains. Through ecosystem enhancement efforts, "banking" credits can be established on otherwise idle or marginal lands. These credits can then be sold to produce income. WEG is a leader in the ecosystem banking initiative, having worked on over 17 approved banks to date. |
Site Feasibility Studies |
A thorough site feasibility study should be conducted prior to the installation of detailed planning, permitting, and design. During the feasibility phase, WEG gathers information on site attributes such as vegetation, jurisdictional wetlands, soils, steep slopes, floodplains, preservation areas, and sensitive habitats. This information is used to create a map that clearly identifies the opportunities and constraints of the site. |
Environmental Planning |
WEG thoroughly evaluates the golf course watershed to ensure that the key issues of water supply, stormwater management, and water quality are properly addressed. A water availability study is typically conducted early in the planning phase to evaluate each potential irrigation water supply in terms of quantity, quality, and costs. Our staff is experienced in preparing storm water management plans for golf course settings including the use of innovative storm water management solutions, such as created wetlands and streams. An integrated pest management plan (IPM) is typically developed to provide the course superintendent with valuable information on how to reduce envirnmental impacts, maintain a healthy golf course, and save on operational costs. |
Golf Course Engineering |
The primary focus during the design phase of the project is to avoid or minimize any impacts to environmental features identified in the planning phase. This is accomplished through engineering design, landscape architecture, and coordination with the golf course architect. Of principal importance is the design of the drainage features which includes proper sizing of pipes to meet the project goals and design of the lakes and ponds. Water quality Best Management Practices (BMPs) are integrated into the golf course corridor to treat as much of the runoff as possible from the course. Lakes and water features on the golf course are typically designed as BMPs and as storage facilities. A comprehensive Erosion and Sediment (E & S) control design is prepared and then implemented during the construction phase of the project. |
Golf Course Site Design |
WEG provides site planning and design for golf clubhouses, maintenance facilities, entrance roads and other golf course related structures and facilities. These services include obtaining all required approvals and complete construction documents for project bidding. Through a team approach utilizing engineers and landscape architects, WEG provides site plans for attractions, as well as functional and cost-effective facilities. |
