James River Mitigation LandBank
APM Terminal - Maersk
York River Mitigation Bank
The James River Mitigation Landbank (JRMLB) is situated on 430 acres of James River floodplain in Goochland County, Virginia. Prior to becoming the industry trend, Williamsburg Environmental Group, Inc. (WEG) was instrumental in helping the project proponents identify a wetland banking opportunity that would include a mosaic of habitat types and environmental conditions. WEG demonstrated the value that would be created with proper planning, design, and long-term commitment to project goals. This mitigation bank was the first non-tidal wetland bank in Virginia to complete the Interagency Review Team ((IRT) - formerly MBRT) process and gain formal authorization.
WEG was able to assist the client through all phases of project development including feasibility, design, construction oversight, planting, and long-term maintenance and monitoring. WEG also completed all stages of the mitigation bank establishment process from submission of the banking prospectus through implementation plan development and final banking instrument approval.
To date, JRMLB has constructed over 224 acres of non-tidal wetlands. Stream mitigation efforts have included approximately 12,000 linear feet of intermittent stream channel designed with the intent of creating functional systems that would provide varied habitat for aquatic organisms. WEG is currently performing mitigation maintenance and monitoring for Phases I and II, and is preparing for Phase III construction, which will include both stream preservation/enhancement and wetland creation.
Projects eligible to use this site for mitigation must be located within the geographic service area of the Bank. The service area extends from its eastern limit at the Henrico County/Charles City County line west along the James River to Appomattox and Amherst Counties.
