Williamsburg Environmental Group, Inc. (WEG) offers a unique set of capabilities in the area of park/recreation facilities and athletic field design. Our staff of planners, landscape architects, engineers, and agronomists provides a team approach focusing on the specific environmental, functional, and user-related issues associated with each individual project. WEG's staff have participated in a wide variety of park and recreational design projects ranging from master planning and detailed design to construction bid document preparation and construction administration. These services have included environmental planning, feasibility studies, environmental resource inventories, athletic field design, trail and playground, and lake and pond design. Our team members have experience with projects ranging in scope and complexity from state parks throughout Virginia to local school and public park facilities. Our experience and knowledge allow us to provide solutions to a wide variety of project types including local, regional, and state facilities.

Parks, Open Space, and Trails |
WEG design staff develop multiple open-space and trail layout alternatives acknowledging sensitive zones within the area of study. WEG provides detailed plans and specifications including geometrics, grading and drainage, erosion and sediment control, and construction details. Innovative design approaches include bridges to avoid any wetland impacts on-site and paths that meander through different forest types allowing users to experience a dramatic shift in ecosystems. Paths are also designed with gentle slopes to provide handicap accessibility in accordance with ADA Standards. WEG has the in-house capabilities to develop detailed renderings and maps that may be used as exhibits and educational signage. |
Athletic Facilities |
WEG utilizes its team approach for the design of new athletic fields and athletic field renovation projects. These services involve complete civil site design services including construction documentation preparation, agronomy plan preparation, irrigation design, athletic field lighting coordination, and turf management. |
Renovations |
WEG routinely supports athletic facilities renovation projects. Team members begin by conducting an on-site inspection of existing conditions in order to evaluate the facility from a safety and playability standpoint. Based on the analysis, a detailed report is completed with recommendations for improvements and/or retrofits. WEG will then provide a variety of services in support of the efforts, including, but not limited to: civil engineering, stormwater management design, agronomic services, and construction notes and details. In addition to site plans, WEG provides bid assistance, construction administration, and turfgrass grow-in services. |
Agronomy |
WEG's agronomy services involve the determination of soil gradation, classification, and fertility in order to plan for turfgrass production, maintenance, and weed control. Soil samples are taken to determine if existing topsoil may be used for cost efficiency. WEG may determine and specify appropriate soil amendments to provide topsoil with the proper structure and fertility for new turf. WEG will also investigate turf selection alternatives and will make recommendations for the most appropriate turf grass species and cultivars. |
