Cannon Ridge Golf Course (Celebrate VA)
Working with former PGA Tour Commissioner, Deane Beman and Florida based
architect Bobby Weed, Williamsburg Environmental Group, Inc. (WEG)
prepared engineering plans and obtained local permits for the Cannon Ridge Golf Course within the Celebrate Virginia
development. The construction plans addressed erosion and sediment
control, drainage design, and treatment of sensitive areas including
steep slopes adjacent to the Rappahanock River. Due to the proximity
of the project to the Rappahanock and the input of local interest
groups such as “Friends of the Rappahannock”, water
quality was a significant concern for this project. To address this
issue WEG used innovative design including the conversion of erosion
and sediment control measures to provide permanent water quality
treatment of runoff from the golf course and prepared a detailed
integrated pest management plan. WEG also prepared site plans for
the clubhouse and maintenance facility.
Prior to construction of the golf course, WEG assisted the Silver
Companies in obtaining permits from the Army Corps of Engineers and
state Department of Environmental Quality for the 1,642-acre Celebrate
Virginia project. WEG water resource engineers also conducted a
water availability study that investigated every potential water
source, including on-site runoff and storage, groundwater wells,
municipal supplies, treated wastewater, and withdrawals from the
Rappahonock River.
The golf course was
completed and opened for play in 2003. WEG provided construction
oversight in regard to environmental and engineering issues throughout
the construction period.
