In May 2003, Williamsburg Environmental Group, Inc. (WEG) was selected by the City of Hampton through a competitive process by the City of Hampton to provide on-call services for landscape architecture and irrigation design. The City desired a process where a local consultant could be called on to provide design of small landscape projects in a timely manner without going through a selection process each time services were required.  To date, WEG has provided services on two projects.  In the fall of 2003, WEG designed landscape plans for the Briarfield Road Community Center and in the fall of 2005 also designed landscape and irrigation plans for the East Pembroke Avenue/1st Street enhancement.  Both project scopes included conceptual plans for City review as well as detailed construction plans, specifications and site inspections.

The Briarfield Road Community Center is located near Lindsay Middle School in a highly visible area in Hampton.  The building was designed to have a modern look and the landscaping needed to compliment that design.  Two conceptual plans and an appropriate plant palette were presented to the City for review.  A final landscape plan was developed as well as a final plant palette after discussions with the City.  This final design plan included areas for privacy, sidewalks to connect circulation from Lindsay Middle School, enhanced landscaping of the existing parking lot at the Community Center, a design for expanded parking and a landscape theme that fit the design of the building.

Hampton Inn Landscape PlansThe enhancement at East Pembroke Avenue and 1st Street is part of the Buckroe Master Plan for the City of Hampton.  WEG provided full landscaping design services for this portion of the master plan.  Because of the location of the project, plant material needed to be tolerant of urban conditions and salt due to potential ocean spray and hurricanes in the area.  Working closely with the City’s Planning office, WEG developed a planting plan that framed views to Buckroe Park and Beach and addressed the environmental constraints of the site.  WEG also worked with the City to choose a hardy turfgrass that would survive the local conditions and heavy pedestrian traffic from future events.  An irrigation plan was required for the proposed landscaping and was implemented into the construction plans.  The quality of plant material provide by the contractor was a major concern to the City.  WEG responded to this concern by attending site visits at the nurseries with city staff to hand-select plant stock for the landscaping.
