WEG provided landscape architectural, environmental and water resources engineering services under an open end services contract to the Fairfax County Park Authority (FCPA) for the renovation of an existing park trail system and farm pond.  The park is located within an urban setting in the heart of Fairfax County, VA.  The park is used extensively by the public and is surrounded by residential and commercial development.  The farm pond was filled with sediment, had a failing dam embankment, and was covered with algae and devoid of habitat prior to reconstruction.  An innovative approach to stormwater management and best management practices, that educated the public and was friendly to the environment, was the mission given to WEG by the FCPA.

James City County District Park Sports Complex and District ParkWEG provided conceptual design, schematic plans, construction documents, specifications, cost opinions, regulatory permitting and construction oversight for the park design project.  WEG developed multiple design options for the pond layout, trail design, retaining wall, deck and boardwalk amenities.  WEG designed a new trail system based upon ADA standards and designed a wetland environment around the pond that consisted of “forested” and “emergent” wetland communities.  Signage is being used to educate the public about plants, wetlands and how they can improve water quality.

The pond was enlarged and converted into a regional storm water management pond with best management practice value for improving water quality.  The dam embankment was reconstructed and WEG coordinated geotechnical and structural engineering services.  WEG also provided bid support, GPS layout of schematic design, and utility easement coordination.
