Williamsburg
Environmental Group, Inc. (WEG) provided stream restoration planning
and design consulting services to SouthCoast Properties as part
of the Founder's Bridge development located in Chesterfield and
Powhatan Counties ,Virginia. The project included daylighting 80
linear feet (LF) of Michaux Creek and restoring 715 LF of ephemeral/intermittent
stream channel. Floodplain restoration was also incorporated into
the overall stream and riparian buffer restoration plan.
Michaux
Creek has approximately a 3.9-square mile watershed. A portion of
Michaux Creek was filled for a road crossing, exhibited bank erosion,
and a select area of the riparian buffer was cleared during previous
construction activities. Beavers had clogged the culvert, essentially
ponding thousands of feet of stream. The design utilized reference
reach data and implemented restoration measures including toe stabilization,
instream habitat structures (cross vane and j-hook), and live stakes
to provide long-term stability and habitat enhancements. Sediment
and construction debris removal and riparian buffer plantings were
also completed as part of the project.
WEG provided
construction management services and is currently completing the
monitoring phase of the project. Annual monitoring activities include
habitat, cross-section and profile surveys, vegetation surveys and
appropriate photo-documentation.
