Greenbrier Sporting Club
Williamsburg Environmental Group Inc. (WEG) provided full scale water resource engineering services including watershed analysis, restoration design, floodplain alteration studies and an official floodplain map revision for Howard Creek as it flows through the Greenbrier Resort and Sporting Club in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia. In addition, WEG provided regulatory compliance and permitting, stream restoration/stabilization design, wetland mitigation plans, and golf course engineering services for the Greenbrier Sporting Club.
The overall project includes natural conveyance through an 18-hole championship golf course with clubhouse and lodge facilities, residential neighborhood and cabin development, and associated recreational and fishing facilities which were enhanced as a component of the habitat restoration project. WEG utilized natural channel design principles and techniques for the main reach and adjacent tributaries entering the site and developed plans for the floodway that balance protection of the natural environment, floodplain impacts, and restoration of degraded areas. In conjunction with the overall improvements to the area, WEG coordinated with local, state, and federal officials regarding all environmental compliance issues for the site and secured approval for stream restoration and wetland mitigation plans to improve recreational and fishing habitat along Howard Creek and its floodplain.
As much of the project is located in the floodplain of Howard Creek, extensive hydrologic and hydraulic analysis and modeling were integral components in the planning process in order to ensure that the project would not adversely affect the floodplain. Recently, WEG completed as-built surveys of the post project conditions, and has submitted documentation certifying the projects’ success to all involved agencies, including the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to obtain a certified Letter of Map Revision (LOMR).
Completed aspects of the project to date include: The Sam Snead Championship Golf Course designed by Tom Fazio, over 100 cabin style houses along Howard Creek, 1000 FT + of restored trout fishing habitat, and a full service spa and recreation center with various amenities.
