Williamsburg Environmental Group, Inc. (WEG) completed a Wetland Mitigation Plan for the Petersburg Interstate Industrial Park, in cooperation with the City of Petersburg and Chaparral Steel. This project offered the unique opportunity of wetland mitigation and stormwater control in a cooperative venture between both government and private industry. Through an agreement between Chaparral Steel and the City of Petersburg, approximately 29 acres of proposed wetland mitigation would be provided at the 247-acre Petersburg Interstate Industrial Park. WEG was involved in all phases of the project including site selection, wetland mitigation design, permitting, and water resource engineering including stormwater analysis and design upgrades for the existing stormwater pond. There were four main wetland mitigation areas proposed within the Petersburg Interstate Industrial Park. WEG’s water resources engineers evaluated the watersheds for the site and the surrounding area in order to promote wetland hydrology for mitigation while providing drainage for the remainder of the site. The outlet structure and emergency spillway for the existing stormwater pond were redesigned to maintain the lake’s current normal pool and attenuate peak flows to meet the City’s stormwater requirements. Repairs to an existing breach at the dam were also included in the Wetland Mitigation Plan.
