York River Mitigation Bank
Williamsburg Environmental Group, Inc. (WEG) was instrumental in both the design and regulatory approval of the James River Mitigation Landbank, a 430-acre nontidal wetland bank located in Goochland County Virginia . The Bank, which was established in 1999, is designed to create a self-sustaining functioning aquatic system to replace the functions and acreage of wetlands lost to development. The Bank establishes a diverse riparian ecosystem through the implementation of wetland restoration, creation, and preservation; stream restoration; and riparian buffer restoration.
The Bank will be developed in phases. Phase 1, which encompasses 149 acres, was completed in fall 1999. Upon completion, the Bank will incorporate approximately 350 acres of wetland mitigation, 80 acres of planted riparian corridor, and over 13,000 linear feet of stream channel restoration.
Projects eligible to use this site for mitigation must be located within the geographic service area of the Bank. The service area extends from its eastern limit at the Henrico County/Charles City County line west along the James River to Appomattox and Amhurst Counties.
